SUMMARY:

Assists in the development and oversight of a comprehensive athletic care program focused on education, injury prevention, and the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athletes.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist coaching staff in planning, designing, and implementing programs to reduce the risk of weather-related injuries.
  • Develop emergency procedures for athletes and other students injured during school-sponsored sports activities.
  • Monitor the progress of injured athletes and advise coaches on return-to-play timelines.
  • Communicate regularly with coaches regarding athlete progress and participation readiness.
  • Maintain close communication between the athletic training program and school administration.
  • Develop and implement medical protocols in collaboration with appropriate personnel.
  • Establish and enforce rules and regulations for athletic training rooms, programs, and staff.
  • Provide medical coverage for high school home athletic events and practices; attend away events as scheduled. 
  • Administer first aid as necessary.
  • Evaluate and treat minor chronic injuries and related conditions to support athlete performance.
  • Fit and provide protective or injury-prevention equipment, including adhesive tape, braces, and bandages.
  • Provide medical assistance to injured athletes as directed by a licensed physician, including injury evaluation, referrals, operation of therapeutic devices, and fitting of protective equipment.
  • Supervise athletic training room operations, including equipment maintenance, supply inventory, and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections of training areas.
  • Ensure compliance with all recordkeeping requirements, policies, and procedures.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

Bachelor’s degree in athletic training  

Master’s degree in athletic training (required for individuals entering the profession after 2022, per CAATE accreditation standards)

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

Current South Carolina Athletic Training Licensure through the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (SCLLR)

Current certification through the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC)

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification

National Provider Identifier (NPI) number preferred

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret school district policies and procedures relevant to the position. Ability to respond to inquiries and effectively communicate with students, parents, coaches, administrators, public stakeholders, and the Board of Education.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, and data interpretation. Competent in using basic statistical analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical scenarios.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to address practical issues and adapt to situations with limited standardization. Able to assess needs and provide prompt, appropriate responses.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties in compliance with all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

 

Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district relevant to the responsibilities of the position. Possesses expertise in athletic training methods, techniques, and procedures, including the proper maintenance and use of equipment, materials, and protective devices. Effectively manages programs and coordinates with staff as needed.

 

Apply current research and best practices within the field. Establishes and maintains positive, professional relationships with students, parents, staff, and the broader school community. Communicates clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

 

Effectively organizes and maintains a flexible work schedule to meet reporting and operational deadlines. Demonstrates strong self-management skills, with the ability to multitask and work both independently and collaboratively. Ensures timely submission of all required reports and documentation in accordance with district timelines.

 

The position requires adherence to deadlines, collaboration with multiple stakeholders—including teachers, administrators, parents, and community members—and the ability to manage frequent demands and extended work hours.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions. The role requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying of objects. Medium strength is necessary to position patients for examinations and to assist them on and off examination tables as needed. The position demands a flexible work schedule, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.

 

Duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, with potential exposure to varying temperatures, bodily fluids, and various medical chemicals. The role involves continuous interaction with students and may require extended working hours.  Local and overnight travel may also be required.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

260 Day (Includes 24 paid holidays)

Level 119 Pay Scale

 

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full-time employment during the school year.  Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

 

EVALUATION 

Performance of this job is evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
