The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries among student-athletes. They play a vital role in maintaining the health and safety of young athletes during practices, games, and training sessions.
· Communication & Collaboration – Maintain communication with student athletes, guardians, coaches, medical professionals, therapists, and school staff to ensure coordinated medical care, effective injury recovery, and overall healing. · Compliance – Adhere to the established policies and procedures set forth by the school district, Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), and Virginia High School League (VHSL), ensuring all aspects of student-athlete participation, safety, and eligibility meet institutional and regulatory standards. · Education & Risk Awareness for Coaches – Deliver targeted training and educational resources to equip coaches with the knowledge to identify field hazards, assess injury risk factors, and apply effective prevention strategies that foster a safe and supportive athletic environment.
· Education for Student Athletes– Develop and deliver overall health education initiatives to expand student-athletes’ understanding of nutrition, physical fitness, and wellness practices that promote long-term well-being and athletic performance. · Infection Control – Uphold solid hygiene and infection prevention standards through proper handwashing, sanitization, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), sterile wound care techniques, and adherence to health protocols that minimize the spread of infectious agents. |
· Injury Assessment – Deliver prompt first aid and administer therapeutic treatment to student athletes in response to injuries or medical concerns. Determine appropriate treatment plans and/or necessary referrals. · Injury Management - Monitor athletic injuries through treatment, therapeutic care, and rehabilitation strategies to support a safe and timely return to the field. Assess playing status to ensure response time and care meet established standards for athlete health and safety. · Injury Prevention – Design and implement conditioning programs, educate student-athletes on proper techniques, and assess equipment, field hazards, and injury trends to proactively minimize the risk of injury. · Management of Medical Supplies & Modalities– Ensure the availability and proper storage of essential medical supplies and modalities to support timely treatment and compliance with safety and regulatory requirements. · Management of Training Area- Ensure the cleanliness, operational readiness, and safety of the athletic training space by adhering to sanitation protocols, maintaining equipment functionality, and coordinating staff coverage and scheduling to maximize athlete access for treatment and rehabilitation. · Management of Treatment Area – Maintain a clean, organized, sterile treatment environment that adheres to infection control protocols. · Medical Devices & Therapy Management – Monitor and evaluate therapeutic techniques and medical equipment to help reduce injury recurrence and accelerate recovery timelines, supporting timely medical clearance for athletic participation. |
· Student Health Record & Recordkeeping – Document and maintain comprehensive records of injury evaluations, treatment plans, physician notes, and health-related data to ensure an accurate and thorough reference trail. Process injury reports in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, while safeguarding medical information in strict accordance with HIPAA standards.
