GENERAL INFORMATION
Title: Athletic Trainer/Health & PE Teacher – Middle School Department: Athletics Salary Grade: 10 Month Teacher + Athletic Stipend
FLSA Status: EXEMPT

POSITION SUMMARY

     The Middle School Athletic Trainer/Health and Physical Education Teacher will serve a dual role, supporting both the academic and healthcare needs of student-athletes. This position is designed to promote student wellness, injury prevention, and safe participation in athletics while also providing high-quality instruction in health and physical education.

     Athletic Trainers provide specialized services in preventing, evaluating, diagnosing, and treating athletic injuries to ensure student-athlete safety and well-being.  As an athletic trainer, the individual will provide on-site care and management of non-orthopedic athletic injuries, including prevention, assessment, immediate treatment, and rehabilitation programs under the supervision of a licensed physician and in collaboration with school health staff, coaches, parents, community healthcare providers, and administrators.  The position requires evening availability for practices and games and may require travel for football games.

     As a teacher, the individual will plan and deliver engaging, effective standards-based lessons in health and physical education that foster lifelong fitness, wellness, and healthy decision-making. The teacher will use a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs, assess student learning, and contribute to the overall school community.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Injury Evaluation, Care, and Prevention 

  • Conduct initial evaluations of athletic injuries or conditions. 
  • Provide emergency care and coordinate referrals to appropriate healthcare professionals. 
  • Develop, implement, and monitor rehabilitation programs tailored to student needs. 
  • Apply preventive measures (taping, bracing, wrapping) to reduce injury risk. 
  • Create and rehearse Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for all sports venues. 
  • Provide education to our community related to illness and injury prevention, recognition, and treatment. 

Communication and Coordination 

  • Serve as liaison among student-athletes, parents, coaches, physicians, school nurses, and administration. 
  • Communicate with parents regarding athlete care, participation, and medical referrals. 
  • Regularly report injury status to parents, coaches, school nurses, administrators, and athletic directors. 

Recordkeeping and Compliance 

  • Maintain up-to-date treatment logs and injury records. 
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and FERPA guidelines. 
  • Adhere to school division policies and applicable VHSL regulations. 

Instructional Duties 

  • Teach up to four (4) classes as assigned. 
  • Develop lesson plans aligned with division curriculum and instructional best practices. 
  • Develop and provide effective, engaging lessons for students 
  • Collaborate with department members 

Administrative and Operational Support 

  • Maintain inventory of training room supplies and equipment. 
  • Attend continuing education courses and stay up to date on best practices for Athletic Training and Health/Physical Education
  • Collaborate with Athletic Director on supply ordering, budget planning, game-day logistics and insurance claims. 
  • Assist with development and enforcement of LCS athletic policies (e.g., evaluating and storing physicals, concussion protocol, heat policy, injury clearance, school policy and procedures, weight room safety).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Requirements

  • A current Virginia Athletic Training license and BOC certification 
  • A current Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Health and Physical Education.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification
  • Candidate must possess the ability to pass a background check 
  • NPI Number (can be gained after selection) 

Preference

  • Prior experience as a school-based or clinical athletic trainer 
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certification
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of athletic training best practices, sports injury response, and rehabilitation 
  • Familiarity with VHSL regulations and school athletic policies 
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and documentation skills 
  • Organized and detail-oriented with strong time management 
  • Proficiency in maintaining medical records and reports 
  • Physical capacity to support injured athletes in a fast-paced environment

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
  • Supervise student athletic training aides as needed.

  • Supervise athletic training and/or health and physical education  students from local colleges

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Travel to off-campus athletic events for football games
