Westwood Public Schools seeks candidates of diverse backgrounds and experiences for the role of Full-Time Athletic Trainer from September 1 - December 31, 2025. The WPS Athletic Trainer works closely with the Athletic Director to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all student-athletes grades 6-12, and is responsible for providing them exceptional care. Our ideal candidate is knowledgeable, approachable, and dedicated to supporting all students. You will be an integral part of our Athletic Department as we create and sustain a safe culture of excellence, sportsmanship, community, and learning.

 

The Athletic Trainer reports directly to the Athletic Director and collaborates with the middle and high school principals and school nurses. This full-time position (approximately 35 hours/week) includes evenings and weekends. Typical work-day hours are from 2pm - 8pm, Monday-Thursday, and from 2pm - 10pm on Fridays and vary based on practice and athletic contest schedules. Pay is hourly, from $290-$355 per hour, commensurate with experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in an Athletic Training Program
  • Certification from the NATABOC (National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification) 
  • Licensed as an Athletic Trainer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • First Aid, CPR/AED Certification required
  • Experience working with adolescents strongly preferred
  • Experience with SWAY concussion testing preferred 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support student-athletes by focusing on prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and immediate care of athletic injuries; rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries; health care administration
  • Provide coverage of practices and daily events (according to a schedule created in conjunction with the Athletic Director)
  • Cover all home contests for all levels on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends according to the schedule set in conjunction with the Athletic Director
  • Advise athletes regarding proper maintenance of strong health and conditioning and make return-to-play decisions
  • Establish respectful and professional relationships between physicians, allied health providers, coaches, athletes and parents/caregivers 
  • Protect students by ensuring that players participate only when physically able and that relevant physician’s instructions are understood and followed
  • Work and maintain daily hours of operation in the athletic training room according to schedule created in conjunction with the Athletic Director
  • Maintain confidential athlete records, including accident reports and rehabilitation procedures, and provide reports as required to the Athletic Director
  • Render emergency care to athletes as necessary until transfer of medical responsibility is made to a physician or recognized EMS
  • Work in conjunction with school health offices to ensure proper care of student-athletes
  • Other duties as required

  • Calm under pressure: the ability to manage multiple, simultaneous tasks, including the ability to prioritize, manage and organize workload
  • Computer skills, including Google Suite

 

Job Environment

Work takes place indoors and outdoors, within school building settings, in gymnasiums, fitness centers, fields, courts, and other varied academic and athletic settings. The job takes place in a high-performing school district with high expectations, and requires the physical capacity to stand for long hours, lift equipment and patients, and work in a dynamic athletic environment.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Requires sufficient vision to read printed documents and to view detail on a computer screen for extended periods.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching, as well as carrying and occasionally lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on the telephone, and in the classroom.
  • Ability to hear sounds clearly up to twenty feet.
  • Travel among buildings and communities is required.
