Scope of Position

The Head Softball Coach (HC) will be responsible for facilitating the academic, athletic, and overall growth of every Softball student-athlete. Additionally, this individual, will work closely with the Director of Athletics (AD) to continually assess and elevate the program's status in the areas of academics, recruiting, budget tracking and reporting, fundraising, equipment ordering, marketing/public relations, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, departmental compliance, and alumni engagement. The HC develops and directs recruiting efforts, academic and non-academic counseling/advising, NJCAA compliance, program budgeting and coaching of student athletes in Softball.  The HC works in collaboration with the Athletic Department in driving campus culture for the entire student body and fellow team members of LCCC. 

Key Measurable Expectations (KMEs)

  • Plan, organize, and direct all activities involved with LCCC Softball program, including the development and maintenance of a positive and quality philosophy for all facets of the team to be carried out in competition, in the classroom, and within the community. 
  • Serve as a key recruiter of prospective student-athletes. The HC will work with the AD to generate college-approved letters of intent (agreements) with student athletes. Recruiting can occur through attending in and out-of-state games and tournaments, developing relationships and making regular contacts with coaches, and conducting high school and home visits. 
  • Develop, monitor and manage Softball scholarship and program budgets. 
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate practices, games, personal and team travel in compliance with institutional (NJCAA and Region 24) policies and procedures. 
  • Collaborate with the AD to develop strategies for the retention of student-athletes.
  • Be familiar with and understand rules and regulations of the National College Athletic Association, National Junior College Athletic Association, and Region 24. 
  • Participate in public relation activities, including interviews with news outlets such as newspapers, radio, podcasting, streaming, social media and television media as well as attending press conferences and making public appearances representing LC Athletics. 
  • Represent the department at professional, civic, charitable, and alumni events. 
  • Assist with the setup, care and maintenance of the gym/field/court (Athletic Facilities).
  • Monitor academic progress of athletes with regard to grades, attendance, and conduct on and off the court. 
  • Report information promptly and accurately to the media by utilizing the College's Sports Information and Media Relations Team. 
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising activities to support the advancement of the program. 
  • Demonstrate leadership in collaboration with the AD through athletic dept standards. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to support the broader enrollment & recruitment goals of the colleges strategic plan.
  • Foster and maintain a professional and positive relationship with athletes, community members, college team members (colleagues), and Trailblazer’s Booster Club. 
  • Maintain confidential student records and all exhibit confidentiality with relation to matters pertaining to Lewis & Clark Community College, its student athletes, and the Athletic Department as is appropriate. 
  • Attend Athletic Department and All Team Meetings. 
  • Participate, attend, and complete the necessary duties as assigned for the success of the Athletic Department and its student athletes through fundraising, compliance, eligibility, recruitment, scheduling, community outreach, program maintenance, program development, program promotions, budgeting and all items deemed as standards to the Athletic Department by the AD.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Bachelor's degree and the equivalent coaching experience required below;
    • Experience in the development of student athletes at a high school, collegiate, or professional level which may include assistant coaching experience. 
    • Experience in recruiting and the development of athletic programs.  
    • Experience with the development of academic aspirations for the student athlete.  
    • Must show the ability to meet and exceed the Standards & Timelines of the LC Athletics Team culture.

  • A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required for success in this role, in addition to normal courtesy and tact with the community in which the coach will be working. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature at times. Work may involve motivating or influencing others in a positive way. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others in an effort to benefit and promote Lewis & Clark Community College.
  • Knowledge of and or targeted understanding of: 
    • The sport in which one will be coaching. 
    • NCAA, NJCAA, and Region 24 rules and policies 
    • Learning and motivational methods. 
    • Structure and content of the English language including spelling, composition, and grammar. Effective recruiting and scouting prospective student-athletes. 
    • Effective promotional practices. 
    • Academic requirement in order to properly advise student-athletes. 
  • Preferred Skills & Abilities: 
    • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication. 
    • Experience with managing budgets. 
    • Computer proficiency and understanding of Microsoft Office products.
    • Dealing with prospective student-athletes and college staff and personnel. 
    • Strong organizational management skills.
    • Problem solving skills. 
    • Teaching and/or communicating instruction effectively. 
    • Ability to equitably apply rules to specific problems to produce results. 
    • Concerted ability to listen attentively to your colleagues, student athletes, and management in an effort to work together as a team.
    • Ability to multitask in coordinating practices, games, and activities on campus and while traveling. 
    • Understanding of the importance to maintain adherence to National, and State, and Region Athletic Association standards.

Physical Expectations Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Physical requirements will vary according to expected duties and responsibilities that flow across the role of the position, including but not limited to the following:
    • Lifting up to 5 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally 
    • Carrying up to 5 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally 
    • Bending, squatting, crawling, and reaching above shoulder level occasionally 
    • Keyboarding/routine office work expected daily 
    • Coach will be around moving machinery; may be exposed to marked changes in temperatures; and will at times may be required to drive automotive equipment. 
    • Coach may be exposed to dust, fumes, and gases during field and court maintenance.
    • Overnight trips for games and recruiting required.

Team Members can expect to be paid a salary between $56,411 to $76,154, which includes an excellent benefits package. The salary will be based on a combination of relevant education, training, work experience, and skill competencies.
