Woodberry Forest School is seeking a head varsity golf coach to lead the golf programs for the 2026-27 school year. As a member of the Virginia Prep League, Woodberry has a rich academic and athletic tradition and is deeply committed to helping our boys develop into leaders in service to others dating back to the school’s founding in 1889. We are seeking a golf coach who will facilitate our continued pursuit of excellence in golf and academics. Academics and athletics combine with the arts, outdoor programming, and residential life, fulfilling the “whole boy” experience we cherish. In that vein, the head golf coach plays a vital role in the intentional character development of each boy while establishing a highly competitive, positive, and inclusive culture for the golf program. The head coach will build within the program, and demonstrate in his/her own actions, the qualities embodied by the vision and mission of Woodberry Forest School.
Specific coaching characteristics, duties, and responsibilities:
A positive leader of the entire golf program who will build boys up emotionally, physically, and socially while a member of any one of our teams
Uses each opportunity to teach values and character to the boys
Encourages a sense of belonging for all boys who are a part of the program through building relationships with and among the boys
Develops a plan to integrate fundamental teaching for boys at all levels
Coordinates and communicates logistics among all Woodberry golf teams including: highly competitive varsity and junior varsity teams in the spring, beginner and recreational programs in the fall and spring
Works closely with the golf course management team in coordinating school practices and matches in conjunction with membership use of the golf facilities
Supports the athletic department and dean of students in coordinating the use and up-keep of two Trackman practice bays
Understands the academic responsibilities of the boys and follows their progress as students
Deeply understands all physical, mental, and course management skills related to golf and can organize and plan practices accordingly
Defines roles and responsibilities for assistant and lower team coaches
Values strength & conditioning, nutrition, mental health, and playing multiple sports in helping the boys to realize their full potential as athletes
Works collaboratively with Woodberry athletic training staff in support of student prevention and recovery from injuries
Maintains and organizes all golf equipment with the support of Woodberry staff
Works alongside the athletic director to budget each season for operational needs and for long term planning and purchases
Builds relationships with member schools in the Virginia Prep League (VPL)
Understands USGA, Virginia Independent School Athletic Association (VISAA) and VPL policies and rules and supports the implementation of those policies and rules
Works in partnership with the admissions office to communicate to prospective students and families the values and ideals of the entire Woodberry community
Supports athletes’ and families’ transitions to college, inclusive of establishing relationships with college and university programs as appropriate in support of the recruiting process
Desires to continually learn through various means of professional development
Supports assistant coaches towards their own professional development
Has a valid driving license and is willing to be trained to drive a minibus for away competitions
Required:
Bachelor’s degree
Leadership experience within a competitive program
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Preferred:
USGA Certifications
Ability to hold teaching or administrative position
Teacher of an academic class
Demonstrated success in a high school or college setting
