DAVIE COUNTY SCHOOLS MS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
General Statement of Job: Under general supervision, the employee coordinates all athletic programs within the Middle School. This role reports to the principal and the county athletic director. The middle school athletic director is an executive who manages sports programs and is considered the chief administrator of the athletic program. The basic role of the athletic administrator is to provide leadership to the overall athletic program, as well as to manage the details necessary for its successful day-to-day operation. The position is of paramount importance in ensuring that activities are coordinated with the regular school curriculum to provide a well-rounded and meaningful educational experience.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Program Leadership & Vision
- Develop and manage the mission and vision of the athletic program.
- Lead with a philosophy of education-based athletics.
- Establish professional expectations and provide vision for the athletic department.
- Promote the development of all student-athletes.
- Ensure alignment with DCS, NCDPI, and other governing body rules and philosophies.
- Serve as a model of integrity, fairness, and student-centered leadership.
- Promote sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and a safe, supportive environment.
- Uphold professional standards in all interactions and communications.
2. Program Management & Operations
- Coordinate and oversee all school athletic programs.
- Assign facilities for all athletic practices, contests, and events.
- Attend and supervise athletic contests as needed.
- Coordinate special events and promotions for athletics.
- Develop and implement emergency and safety plans.
- Coordinate and supervise the sports medicine program.
- Serve as liaison with the booster club and assist with the coordination of athletic banquets and parent meetings.
- Ensure safe, clean, and prepared to play arenas and athletic facilities.
- Facilitate communication with the community, parents, and media.
3. Scheduling & Contest Management
- Prepare and manage all athletic schedules (regular season, postseason, tournaments).
- Coordinate postponements or cancellations (e.g., due to weather).
- Submit and maintain contest contracts, eligibility lists, and pre-season certifications.
- Schedule and oversee officials, custodians, announcers, security, and support staff.
- Confirm official contracts and submit expense forms for payment.
- Work with school administrators to ensure all athletic contests are supervised, including crowd control and safety personnel.
- Serve as tournament manager for conference and postseason events.
4. Personnel & Professional Development
- Assist in recruiting, hiring, and evaluating coaches and athletic personnel.
- Coordinate attendance of coaches at clinics and professional development.
- Promote coaching certification and monitor qualifications and clearances.
- Offer constructive feedback and maintain a positive rapport with coaches.
- Mediate personnel and morale issues; facilitate ongoing support.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legal standards, including Title IX and ADA.
5. Student-Athlete Oversight
- Verify athlete eligibility and academic progress.
- Schedule and manage physical exams, drug testing, insurance, and consent forms.
- Communicate expectations and the code of conduct to students and parents.
- Recognize athletes’ achievements through awards and programs.
- Monitor and enforce discipline and eligibility rules consistently.
6. Communication & Public Relations
- Serve as the public relations liaison for athletics.
- Promote athletic programs via media, social media, and streaming platforms.
- Notify media and school personnel of schedule changes and updates.
- Create and disseminate athletic calendars and promotional materials.
7. Budget & Finance
- Develop and manage the athletic department budget.
- Oversee fundraising activities and ensure compliance with district and state policy.
- Handle ticket sales, accounting, and financial reporting for events.
- Approve and manage all athletic purchases and equipment inventory.
- Submit and track all vouchers, purchase orders, and expenses.
8. Facilities & Equipment
- Coordinate maintenance and improvements of all athletic facilities.
- Conduct regular safety inspections of equipment and facilities.
- Manage the procurement, distribution, and storage of athletic gear.
- Maintain inventory and oversee reconditioning and replacement needs.
9. Policy & Compliance
- Coordinate and oversee the review and enforcement of athletic codes and handbooks.
- Disseminate and enforce rules and regulations from state and national governing bodies.
- Maintain permanent records (eligibility, injuries, equipment, disciplinary actions).
- Prepare reports and documentation for DCS, NCDPI, and Conference requirements.
10. Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate the athletic program and identify areas for growth.
- Keep current on research, trends, and laws affecting interscholastic athletics.
- Harness school and community resources to meet program needs.
- Facilitate regular coaches’ meetings and confidential discussion processes.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of five years of coaching experience is preferred with knowledge of various sports.
- An individual with an undergraduate degree is preferred.
- Certification from the NIAAA is recommended; coursework toward an advanced degree or academic certification in athletic administration would greatly enhance the position, but is not required.
- Some experience in finance, budget preparation, and fundraising would be a great addition.
