POSITION SUMMARY:

This position under the direction of the Head Swimming Coach is responsible for all phases of the women’s diving program as it relates to the mission of Duquesne Swimming and Diving, and the Duquesne University Department of Athletics. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to coaching, recruiting, team travel, and providing a positive collegiate experience for student-athletes.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Athlete Management

Play a major role in the development of the student-athletes as individuals, students, and competitors

Give support to the student-athletes emotional, nutritional, educational, and physical needs

Practice

Transport prospective student-athletes to the off-campus training facility

Add gas to vehicle when needed.  Retain receipts for pCard reports

Recruiting

Identify, contact, and actively recruit top caliber divers that fit Duquesne’s academic and conference profile

Meet with prospective student-athletes on unofficial and official visits

Travel to meets where needed, developing a good communication base with prospective student-athletes and their families

Fill out appropriate paperwork and submit to head coach for approval

Coaching

Coach based on a teaching/development model

Familiarize oneself with all of the student-athletes in the program

Submit a water and dryland season plan to the head swimming coach

Work with the CMU staff regarding training schedule, cancellations and adjustments

Practices should have a major focus on purposeful drills and technique

Create a positive, learning environment of feedback

Constantly monitor the athletes from a training, mental health, and nutritional health perspective

Communication regarding any student-athlete issues should run through the head coach and then appropriate actions can be taken with outside sources if needed

Continually push the student-athletes to be better everyday

Always communicate with head coach before making any athletic offers to diving prospective student-athletes

Professionalism

Maintain a standard of ethics above the normal population

Influence the student-athletes as a role model and mentor

Be accessible to the student-athletes during the pre-season, peak season, and post-season

Build bridges and trust with each student-athlete while maintaining the proper coach/athlete relationship

Be punctual

Be conscious of personal social media accounts

Attend all mandatory and a majority of “optional” athletic or university functions, if work schedule allows

Meets

Familiarity with DiveMeets.com

Support and attend home swimming meets where diving is not contested

Motivate and give feedback clearly, precisely, and positively

Communication and Fundraising

Give input and fresh ideas with regards to practices

Speak with parents and alums when possible

Communication with student athletes regarding water and dry-land schedule changes should be made in a timely manner

Compliance

Take and pass the NCAA recruiting exam

Maintain diver practice attendance and submit to assistant swimming coach

Build a working relationship with the compliance staff

Make sure to notify coaching staff of any official and unofficial visits by divers

Other Duties

Manage, record and submit pCard documentation on a monthly basis

Secure and organize (paperwork/training facility/transportation) for diving training trip

Completes other duties as assigned

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

Ability to lead and motivate student-athletes

Integrity, leadership, and a thorough knowledge of the sport

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

USA Swimming Certified Diving Coach

Provide the program with athlete skill development and performance analysis

Identifying & recruiting highly competitive student-athletes

Preferred qualifications:

Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and concussion protocol

2+ years of experience coaching at the collegiate level

Master’s degree from an accredited institution
