Spring Sports Strength and Conditioning Coach Job Description

Reports To: Director of Athletics

Position Overview: The High School Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for designing and implementing strength, conditioning, and performance training programs for student-athletes. The role requires working closely with coaches, athletes, and school staff to ensure the safety, performance improvement, and overall fitness of athletes across various sports programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Program Design and Implementation:
    • Develop and implement strength and conditioning programs tailored to the needs of athletes in various sports.
    • Create age-appropriate and sport-specific training routines that focus on improving strength, endurance, agility, flexibility, and injury prevention.
    • Monitor athlete progress and adjust programs as necessary to meet performance goals and address individual needs.
  2. Supervision and Instruction:
    • Lead group workouts and one-on-one training sessions.
    • Teach athletes proper lifting techniques, warm-ups, cool-downs, and injury prevention exercises.
    • Ensure safety by supervising all exercises and maintaining a safe training environment.
  3. Collaboration with Coaches and Staff:
    • Work closely with the athletic department, coaches, and medical staff to identify athletes’ needs and design programs that complement sport-specific skills and fitness requirements.
    • Communicate regularly with coaches about athlete progress, injury prevention, and overall fitness levels.
  4. Athlete Education:
    • Educate athletes on nutrition, recovery strategies, mental toughness, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
    • Provide guidance on proper techniques for resistance training, cardiovascular exercises, and flexibility routines.
  5. Data Tracking and Reporting:
    • Track and analyze athletes' performance metrics, such as strength, speed, agility, and endurance.
    • Prepare reports for coaches, parents, and administrators on athlete progress and areas for improvement.
  6. Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation Support:
    • Work with athletic trainers to identify potential injury risks and implement injury prevention strategies.
    • Provide guidance on rehabilitation exercises for injured athletes as needed.
  7. Maintain Equipment and Facilities:
    • Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of the weight room and training facilities.
    • Ensure that equipment is safe, well-maintained, and available for student use.
  8. Promote a Positive Training Environment:
    • Foster a motivating and supportive atmosphere for all athletes, encouraging teamwork, discipline, and a strong work ethic.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Science, or related field.
  • Certification in strength and conditioning, such as the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or other relevant certifications.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification required.

Experience:

  • Experience working as a strength and conditioning coach, preferably with high school or collegiate athletes.
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing strength training and conditioning programs.
  • Knowledge of injury prevention and rehabilitation techniques.

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sports nutrition.
  • Ability to assess athletes' physical fitness levels and create individualized training programs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple teams and programs.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire athletes to reach their potential.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects, including weights, and physically assist athletes as necessary.
