Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an area appropriate to the responsibilities of the position
  • Successful experience as a softball coach at the college or high school level and as a student activities director, student wellness coordinator, or a closely related student services program.
  • 2-4 years of coaching experience at the collegiate or high school level.  
  • Maintain valid CDL license for driving the college bus.  

Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s degree in physical education or other transfer discipline.  
  • Community college experience in student activities, health & wellness, student services, or advising.  
  • First Aid/CPR Certification. 
  • Experience with NJCAA and Region X policies and by-laws.  

Primary Functions of Position

The Student Activities & Wellness Coordinator/Head Softball Coach provide leadership and oversight of the college’s softball team. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all NJCAA and Region X athletic regulations, as well as overseeing the softball athletic budget and athletic fundraising accounts. The Softball Coach works closely with the Athletic Director and Student Services and Admissions to recruit and retain student-athletes. This is a dual position that includes serving as the Student Activities and Wellness Coordinator. In this role, the Student Activities and Wellness Coordinator plays a key part in enhancing student life by planning college-wide events, supporting student-led organizations, and collaborating closely with the Student Engagement Coordinator.  

 Essential Duties: 

  • Develop an effective recruitment plan and actively recruit student athletes.
  • Maintains a high caliber of team discipline both on and off the field.
  • Maintains a close working relationship with Student Services and instructional faculty to ensure academic progress for student-athletes.
  • Works with Student Services and faculty members to ensure that student athletes receive intervention and academic assistance as needed.
  • Maintains an effective relationship with the area high schools and high school Athletic Directors to ensure an efficient recruiting network.
  • Develops and manages the softball budget, orders equipment, plans and completes travel forms, as well as ensures departmental compliance with policies and procedures of the college.
  • Works with the Athletic Director on fundraising efforts to encourage direct giving, fundraising activities, and sponsorship support.  
  • Maintains the softball programs inventory records, including uniforms, athletic equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist in the operation and staffing of the college gym/training room facility.
  • Organizes summer athletic camps and softball clinics.  
  • Will work with the Student Engagement Coordinator to create campus-wide student activities, programs, and events that promote student engagement, wellness, and school spirit.
  • Maintains professional relationships with the Student Engagement Coordinator and advises the SGA on student-led athletic activities that promote a positive and healthy learning environment.  
  • Collaborates with the Student Engagement Coordinator to align athletic events with college-wide student initiatives.  
  • Implement coaching strategies and methods to develop student athletes' skills and teamwork; analyze performance of team and adjust strategies as needed; evaluate opponents and develop game strategies; plan and conduct practices and other activities in preparation for competition
  • Attend mandatory Region X softball coaching meetings as necessary.   
  • Inform program participants (athletes and staff) of team rules including: conditioning; physical exam and athletic training requirements; practice attendance and participation rules; conduct and behavior expectations relative to practice, during competition, on trips, in the classroom, on campus and in the community; appropriate dress; drugs, alcohol and/or tobacco rules; relations with officials and opponents; responsibility for actions.
  • Coordinate all practices (fall and spring), player travel, and scheduled competitions, including evenings and weekends.  
  • Read, understand, and abide by the current National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Constitution and Bylaws, the Region X Constitution and Bylaws, and the sport rule book as identified in the NJCAA Constitution and Bylaws.  
  • Recruit student athletes in the high schools primarily within Columbus County, N.C., the region and state of N.C., and adhere to the recruiting rules established by the NJCAA.
  • Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the softball field and surrounding athletic complex.  
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director, Executive Vice President, and College President.

  • Knowledge of the budgeting process and procedures required of the college's business operations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role of athletics in the educational process.
  • Ability to enforce rules fairly and equitably.
  • Ability to be fair and unprejudiced in relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ability to communicate well in oral and written form.
  • Ability to travel with the athletic teams to games and events free of external engagements or responsibilities.
