Job Summary

Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) is seeking an energetic and visionary Head Coach to lead our NJCAA Division I program into its 25th year of excellence. Since its founding in 2000–01, the program has built a proud tradition of success, earning seven (7) Region IX Championships and multiple National Tournament appearances.


As Head Coach, you’ll have the opportunity to recruit and mentor student-athletes with scholarships.  The role is split between 60% coaching duties and 40% student services, and you will be responsible for fostering a competitive, supportive, and inclusive team culture while prioritizing the academic success of our student-athletes.


This is a full-time, 12-month position with a starting salary of $51,450 and a comprehensive benefits package, including College-paid Blue Cross Blue Shield family health insurance, single dental coverage, and several other group plan offerings.  A generous leave package supports work-live balance, and relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

  • Head Coach
    1. Manage a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I intercollegiate program including recruiting, scholarships, scheduling, fundraising, travel, and practice planning, and ensure the program conforms to the standards and requirements of the NJCAA and the College.   
    2. Responsible for assisting the Athletic Director with assessment, evaluation, documenting and reporting, benchmarking, and developing key performance indicators/objectives designed to improve programs and service provided and demonstrate co-curricular learning/development.
    3. Maintain a working knowledge of the rules governing the sport to be coached.
    4. Coach the team during scheduled events.   Successfully determine and implement the strategies necessary to motivate the players to maximum levels of individual and team performance.
    5. Remain informed about student athlete's academic progress and communicate with student athletes regarding their academic success.
    6. Must report all incidents of which the coach becomes aware, whether directly or indirectly, regarding Civil Rights, which includes all forms of sexual misconduct, to the WNCC Title IX/Equal Opportunity Coordinator.
    7. Oversee the conditioning and weight-training program; ensure student athletes' progress and adherence to the activities which comprise the program. 
    8. Schedule and conduct regular practice sessions in and out of season, as allowed.
    9. Perform recruiting related activities: contact high school players through written or verbal means of communication; travel to various high schools to scout games; assess the skills and abilities of potential student athletes; view and assess game films. 
    10. Plan and schedule recruitment efforts which includes assuring formal itineraries are developed and communicated to the appropriate departments (Admissions, Residence Life, Career Pathways and Advising Center, etc.) to assure the prospective student visit is conducted in accordance with College and NJCAA policies and procedures.
    11. Ensure travel arrangements are completed for the team and coaching staff for games played at other institutions, including the scheduling of departure and arrival times; making reservations for hotel accommodations, and providing information to visiting coaches. 
    12. Participate in community service projects.
    13. Facilitate the transfer of student-athletes to 4-year institutions.
    14. Assist in the development and monitoring of the team’s budget.
    15. Adhere to all Financial and Business Office internal controls, including submitting timely and appropriate paperwork/forms/documentation/receipts with required signatures/approvals and reconciliation of transactions.
    16. Use and regularly update an Outlook calendar to assist in the scheduling of meetings, office hours, and events across multiple areas of work.
  • Athletics
    1. Schedule and plan events for corporate sponsors.
    2. Meet with current corporate sponsors and recruit new sponsors.
    3. In collaboration with the Alumni office, provide stewardship for alumni and donors.
    4. Plan fundraising events.
    5. Assist with game management including scheduling concessions and gate workers, overseeing concessions, and acting as Administrator on Duty as assigned by the Athletic Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree preferred; completion of at least two years of college required.

Experience and Training:
Two years of coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.

License or Certificate:
First Aid/CPR.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate, a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record that does not exclude the driver from coverage under WNCC’s vehicle insurance is required.

  • Reaching: Frequently used when organizing equipment or demonstrating movements.

  • Exposure to Weather: Often works outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Noise Levels: High noise environments during games and practices.
  • Hazardous Conditions: Potential exposure to minor injuries or accidents during athletic activities.

Sensory Requirements
  • Near Vision: Required for reading schedules, rosters, and game plans.
  • Far Vision: Important for observing athlete performance and game dynamics.
  • Hearing Sensitivity: Necessary for responding to whistles, calls, and verbal cues.
  • Speech Clarity: Must be able to communicate clearly with athletes, staff, and officials.

Manual Dexterity
  • Finger Dexterity: Needed for using computers, writing reports, and handling small equipment.
  • Arm-Hand Steadiness: Useful when demonstrating techniques or handling gear.

Physical Strength
  • Medium Work Level: May need to lift or carry items weighing up to 50 pounds (e.g., equipment bags, training gear).
