PURPOSE AND SCOPE: 

Under the supervision of the Athletic Director and the Principal, the Notre Dame Preparatory (NDP) athletic trainer is a person of faith who strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education; assumes responsibility for the leadership and management of the grades or classes assigned; develops and implements an instructional program according to the needs of the students and the established Diocesan Curriculum Standards; maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school; establishes positive school-community relationships; continues professional development to remain current with religious and academic certi?cations; performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal. 

The athletic trainer assists the Church and the school in the mission of evangelizing. The athletic trainer contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and to the community. By bearing witness to Christ, His Church and the teachings of our Catholic faith, the athletic trainer cooperates with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of our high school students. The athletic trainer leads, instructs, and utilizes effective pedagogy; obtains necessary academic certificates; participates in continual professional development; maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school; and imparts a Catholic worldview through the curriculum. In addition to academic preparation, record-keeping and accountability, the athletic trainer, as a member of a “house” within Notre Dame Preparatory High School, serves as a mentor and campus minister to all students.    

NDP provides an inclusive Catholic school environment for high school students with varying degrees of abilities and backgrounds. The athletic trainer works in collaboration with teachers and several programs to differentiate instruction, modify curriculum and assessments as needed, and partner with parents to support all students. 

This position requires the ability to effectively communicate via phone and email; ensure that all duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality and in a timely manner; flexibility, forward thinking and managing deadlines; willingness to seek the latest educational practices and implement; and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and a wide degree of creativity and latitude are expected. New faculty and teachers are provided with a mentoring program. 

The trainer must maintain current certification and continuing education requirements as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification; maintain current state licensure in accordance with the Arizona Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners; and maintain current certification in CPR/Emergency Cardiac Care. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • The athletic trainer will practice said profession with the parameters of the Arizona Athletic Trainers Association and will follow both the Standards of the Practice Code of Ethics as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers Association.  These duties are based on the needs of the school and athletic programs.  The athletic trainers’ duties enumerated in this document should not be considered all inclusive.  The Athletic Director, as necessary, shall modify duties.  The athletic trainer will be present at home athletic contests and practices and shall attend other post-season and home-hosted contests as directed by the Athletic Director. 
  • Establish an effective athletic training program for high school athletics. 
  • Provide First Aid and injury assessment/treatment/rehabilitation/conditioning for Notre Dame athletes.  The athletic trainer will also be responsible for making appropriate physician and physical therapy referrals. 
  • Provide coverage at home events and practices from the beginning of the Fall sport season to the conclusion of summer activities. 
  • Coordinate the annual required physicals and supervise the clearance of injured athletes prior to and during the season of sports. 
  • Maintain a line of communication with the team physician(s) regarding athletic health care and recommended treatment/rehabilitation for all athletic injuries. 
  • Assist coaching staff in evaluating and implementing sport specific conditioning programs and methods. 
  • Maintain an effective and efficient athletic training room. 
  • Maintain communication with parents on the care and treatment of their student-athlete.   
  • File all necessary reports associated with athletic injuries and or incidents. 
  • Maintain a daily treatment log. 
  • Oversee the ordering of supplies and equipment pertaining to the athletic training room and maintain an up-to-date inventory.  Provide the Athletic Director with an annual budget for supplies and equipment. 
  • Provide Impact testing for all NDP athletes. 
  • Equip each team with appropriate medical equipment for away events. 
  • Teach Sport’s Medicine classes as needed. 
  • Assist in the selection and fitting of protective equipment, including taping, fitting of helmets and shoulder pads. 
  • Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks. 
  • Share professional literature relative to athletic training with the coaching staff. 

 

Performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal.

  • Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of good teaching techniques and child psychology. 
  • Must maintain appropriate grooming and dress as stated in the faculty handbook.

The employee must be able to stand for periods of time outside in the heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The position will require some evening and weekend hours.

EVALUATION 

The performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the procedures developed by the Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory under the direction of the Chaplain, Principal, Assistant Principals and Athletic Director. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 

Twelve-month employee (paid in 12-month contract), full-time, salaried. The Executive Committee under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix establishes base salaries and stipends. A schedule of mandatory days and extra responsibilities is provided prior to the start of a new school year. 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION 

  • Preference given to a practicing Catholic, but faithful persons of other faiths are welcome (admin jobs must be practicing Catholic) 
  • Must be willing to make a public Profession of Faith if Catholic; if non-Catholic, willing to support Catholic teachings and philosophy 
  • B.A. in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, or similar field 
  • Certificates as required by AIA; if teaching, must also hold a teaching certificate or substitute certificate as required by the AZ Department of Education 
  • Receive Safe Environment Training and signed the Code of Conduct. AZ Fingerprint clearance completed.  All completed prior to the start date.
