Job Title: Sports Medicine – Athletic Trainer

Department: Sports Medicine

Reports to: Specialty & Surgical Clinics Manager

Classification: Hourly

Hours for position: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm

Position Overview:

The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) works closely with the providers to provide direct care to patients; making sure they receive compassionate and accurate communication, education and medical services.  The responsibilities of the ATC as a physician extender may include: injury assessment, injury prevention and patient education, patient scheduling, procedure/treatment assistant, communicating with other health care entities and insurance payers. Works with physicians both in the clinic and on WSU's campus. The ATC demonstrates performance consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Works with staff and providers obtaining patient paperwork to support patient care services.

Essential Functions:

  • Extender of Sports Medicine Physicians for care of community in addition to WSU Athletes
  • Establish and maintain communication and collaboration with colleagues, patients, payers and community members, to promote teamwork and positive patient outcomes.
  • Promotes and contributes to a positive work environment, serving others professional and positive attitude.
  • Keep current with the changes in professionalism and hospital policy. Ensure completion of regulatory and departmental competencies within the timeframe set by your supervisor.
  • Accountable to demonstrate work effectiveness through safe completion of assigned tasks in a timely manner. Uses appropriate delegation to assist in patient care.
  • Follow high reliability practices set by the organization and/or department and report safety concerns.  Participate in quality improvement projects throughout the organization in order to support a safe and just culture work environment.
  • Participate in all assigned meetings and committee assignments.
  • Participate in organizational wide new employee orientation and successful completion of departmental orientation.
  • Arrive to your workstation at your appointed time and be able and ready to perform the work assigned. The expectation is that the employee will be present for all scheduled shifts.
  • Collects and tracks medical records for timely transcription and processing providers orders.
  • Gathers all necessary and required documentation supporting patient services to be ready for scheduling and may assist in scheduling appointments.
  • Uploads supporting documentation and authorization information into the EMR consistent with PRH electronic record policy.
  • Communicates and works with referring provider &/or the clinic team to ensure understanding of the varying requirements from insurances to obtain prior authorizations.
  • Uses good judgement in communication of patient needs to other team members.
  • Researches denials, calls insurance companies, doctors’ offices or patients to assist resolve denial issues. 
  • Compile and evaluate data on patients’ responses to procedures/treatments.
  • Analyze patient diagnosis and response to treatment to determine appropriateness of treatment plan being delivered.
  • Train, demonstrate, or guide others in the performance of assigned work.
  • Portray a high level of professionalism of accountability and reliability, driving organization vision, mission and values adhering to our just culture environment.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and take responsibility for departmental space.
  • Respond to requests from patients, colleagues and external customers as requested, following all organizational policies, and governmental regulations.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Any other duties as needed to drive towards the vision, fulfil the mission, and abide by the values of the organization.

Required Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with colleagues and customers.
  • Competent in computer skills including Microsoft Office products.
  • Comfort in answering phones and speaking with customers on the phone.
  • Ability to manage time, tasks, and resources appropriately. 
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technology. 
  • Ability to read and write clearly, and understand policies, labels, and written instructions. 

Required Education, Licensure, Certifications, & Experience:

  • Bachelors or Masters of Science degree, in Athletic Training
  • Current BLS and State of Washington Athletic Training License.  NATA certified preferred.

Preferred Education, Certifications, & Experience:

  • Prefer experience in high school or collegiate athletic training environments and student athletic trainer supervision.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant use of computers and phones.
  • Sitting:  25%.   Standing/Walking:  75%.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying of supplies and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing/pulling of wheelchairs weighing over 200 pounds.
  • Occasional climbing of stairs to reach other levels of the building.
  • Occasional stooping/kneeling to reach items on low shelves and to get into low cabinets.
  • Occasional reaching/handling to complete paperwork.
  • Constant talking/hearing/seeing to interact with patients, staff and visitors.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Location:  Inside.
  • Frequent exposure to noise may cause distraction.
  • Minimal risk of injury due to proximity of moving parts on computer printer, fax machine and copier.
  • Minimal exposure to biohazardous materials.
  • Minimal exposure to drafts

Travel requirements:

Travel to different clinic sites in Pullman and Moscow.
