Position: Girls Varsity Head Basketball Coach
Location: Garfield Heights High School

Job Description:
Garfield Heights City Schools is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach to lead and grow our high school program. The Head Coach will serve as both a mentor and role model, guiding student-athletes toward athletic excellence, academic achievement, and strong character development. The ideal candidate will bring proven leadership, technical knowledge of basketball, and a deep commitment to building a positive and competitive program that represents the values of Garfield Heights City Schools.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Mentorship: Provide vision and leadership for the girls’ basketball program, mentoring student-athletes to achieve their full potential on and off the court.
Program Development: Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive basketball program that emphasizes player development, competitive excellence, and long-term program growth.
Compliance & Eligibility: Ensure players meet all academic and eligibility requirements in accordance with OHSAA and Garfield Heights City Schools policies.
Practice & Game Planning: Create and lead structured practice sessions, develop game strategies, and make in-game decisions to maximize team performance.
Staff Management: Recruit, train, and supervise assistant coaches to provide continuity and support across all levels of the program.
Safety & Conduct: Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment at all times during practices, games, and team-related activities.
Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with families, alumni, and the Garfield Heights community to strengthen support for the girls’ basketball program.
Athletic Development: Collaborate with the athletic department to integrate strength, conditioning, and skill development initiatives.
Program Operations: Oversee scheduling, equipment needs, and effective communication with players, parents, and school personnel.
Professional Growth: Stay current on coaching trends, OHSAA regulations, and best practices in basketball leadership and youth development.
Other Duties: Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration.
Qualifications:
Valid Pupil Activity Permit with the Ohio Department of Education
Satisfactory BCI/FBI background checks
Previous head coaching or high-level assistant coaching experience preferred (3–5 years minimum strongly encouraged)
Strong technical knowledge of basketball and player development
Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, and staff
Commitment to academic accountability, sportsmanship, and positive character development
