GENERAL SUMMARY
Under limited supervision, works to assist each participating student in achieving a high level of athletic skills, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. Reports to the Athletic Director and Principal(s).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
Plans and schedules a regular program of practice in season.
Works closely with the athletics director in scheduling intramural and interscholastic contests.
Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate.
Maintains necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.
Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present.
Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in the coach’s sport.
Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
Presents a positive image of the Lee County School District at all times.
Interacts with others in a respectful and cooperative manner at all times.
Willingly performs other relate duties as assigned or requested.
Education and Experience:
South Carolina Teacher Certification, some coaching and/or physical education experience or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid SC driver’s license.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of the standards, regulations, and laws relating to the position. Knows how to keep abreast of changes in policy, standards, procedures, and regulations pertinent to the program. Knowledge in the development, planning, organization, implementation and management of coaching athletic programs and practices designed to meet educational objectives and requirements. Strong knowledge of word processing, e-mails, spreadsheets, electronic file management, the internet, and reporting and presentation software.
Skills/Efforts:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with school, District staff, parents and community. Ability to instruct others through explanation, demonstration and supervised practice, and/or make recommendations on the basis of technical disciplines. Ability to complete, process, and maintain required records, reports, and other information. Ability to develop and maintain effective communications with school and District employees, the school principal, and the general public. Ability to operate general office equipment including a computer, calculator, copier, etc. Ability to create electronic reports and presentations, use the internet efficiently, communicate electronically via e-mail, and manage electronic data and files in an organized manner.
Working Conditions:
School environment with significant exposure to environmental conditions, to include loud environment and exposure to sun-light. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require considerable attention and working with students. Physical demands are activities requiring movement/lifting items weighing up to 75 pounds. Frequent travel required; occasional overnight travel required.
Responsibility:
Assists in the supervision of students and assistants as assigned.
