    Job Title: Head Coach

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Ability to organize and manage a full sports program.
    • Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sports).
    • Strong knowledge of the sport’s technical aspects and a willingness to stay updated on new theories and methods.
    • Serves as a positive role model for student-athletes through words and actions.

    Supervises:

     

    The head coach is responsible for advising, coordinating, and supporting high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches, working closely with the athletic director and principal when needed.

     

    Job Goal

     

    To teach student-athletes the fundamental skills, strategies, and physical training needed for individual and team success. The coach is also expected to model and promote positive character traits, including self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride in achievement. Additionally, the coach should actively seek to improve their coaching knowledge and skills through clinics, observation, collaboration, and other professional development opportunities.

    • The athletic program strongly influences the community’s view of the school. Coaches must prioritize sportsmanship and mental health, even with pressure to win.
    • The role may require extended time, involves risk of injury, and may present challenges related to due process.
    • This job description is intended to provide clear guidance for fulfilling the role. In situations not specifically addressed, coaches are expected to use sound judgment and common sense in carrying out their responsibilities.
     

    Duties and Responsibilities

     
    • Knows and implements all athletic policies approved by the Fremont RE-2 School Board.
    • Understands and applies state, system, and league regulations.
    • Follows the correct chain of command and attends required meetings.
    • Establishes the coaching philosophy, skills, and techniques for the team.
    • Plans and conducts conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff are informed, aligned with program goals, and supported in their professional growth.
    • Delegates duties, supervises implementation, and evaluates assistant coaches.
    • Maintains team discipline and morale.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the athletic director or principal.
    • Assists with scheduling, transportation, and special event planning.
    • Assists with preparations for scheduled practices and competitions, adheres to designated facility times, and coordinates with maintenance and school staff as needed.
    • Manages paperwork for physicals, parent consent, and eligibility.
    • Ensures safety and care of equipment and facilities.
    • Advises the athletic director on policy and procedure improvements.
    • Mentors athletes in character traits: trust, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
    • Monitors academic performance and behavior.
    • Provides supervision and guidance at all events and during travel.
    • Distributes and enforces rules specific to the sport.
    • Creates plans for injuries, emergencies, and medical care.
    • Submits injury reports within 24 hours.
    • Oversees student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
    • Handles discipline and communicates with parents when needed.
    • Assists athletes with college or post-secondary plans.
    • Works with the athletic director on budgeting and equipment needs.
    • Tracks and collects equipment; ensures inventory accuracy.
    • Labels and organizes equipment properly.
    • Monitors access to equipment and storage areas.
    • Limits athlete access to authorized areas only.
    • Maintains cleanliness of locker rooms and equipment.
    • Secures building facilities when custodians are unavailable.
    • Promotes respect for equipment and school property.
    • Coordinates preseason meetings with parents, coaches, and players.
    • Promotes the sport within the school and community.
    • Reviews and approves media releases.
    • Maintains strong relationships with media, parents, volunteers, and fans.
    • Shares information with media regarding schedules, results, and events.
